Trucks & Feed the soul of Quality Feeds!

DelayPay recently caught up with long-time client, Tim Cleary from Quality Feeds. It was no small feat getting hold of Tim who juggles 50-60 calls one day and fixes/maintains trucks the next. Tim’s passion for agriculture and transport is evident along with the satisfaction he receives from providing quality service to farmers.

With a background in transport and agriculture machinery sales, Tim saw a need for a feed supply business that provided the best quality service.

“Quality Feeds is an end-to-end service where we buy, test, sell and deliver hay. We also provide a range of transport options for machinery, containers and general goods,” Tim said.

Having grown the business from humble beginnings of 2 trucks, Tim now operates 5 trucks including dedicated hay trailers with a 45 foot drop deck widener, tippers and machinery floats. While his business is not just limited to hay, he does have dedicated hay trucks and trailers which can transport up to 70 bales depending on weights.

Quality Feeds is based in Victoria but services nationwide, predominantly along the Eastern seaboard.

“Last year there was quite a demand for hay in NSW and we traveled to locations such as Port Macquarie, Guyra and Armidale, whereas so far this year demand has mainly been Victoria,” said Tim.

Clients come from many different industries but a core part is dairy, with the business located in close proximity to prime dairy country.  Lately, he has been doing a lot of paddock work with hay going directly from the paddock to dairy farms.

“I use DelayPay to free up my cashflow as we are an in and out business. DelayPay allows me to purchase bulk hay to keep cashflow coming in.  Recently, I purchased 5 B-Double loads where I had to pay the supplier within 14 days which then allowed the customer to pay later when their income or milk cheque comes in.”

“DelayPay gives me the freedom to do these bulk loads,” Tim said.

Tim was able to give some insight on the current hay market, saying “this year, a lot of good quality hay has been made, although not necessarily the quantity. Demand on hay has been sporadic, with heaps on and then slowing right down.”

“Looking forward, no one is sure of the weather and we are still waiting for a break in Victoria with rain received patchy. My gut feel is the demand for hay will go up which will increase the price, but it’s a game no one can predict,” he said.

Having been in the transport industry since the age of 19 and now with 5 employees plus 5 trucks, Tim’s years of experience has led him to not only broker and transport hay but operate the accounts, pay wages, work as a mechanic along with being a part-time counselor!

“Trucks and this industry are my heart and soul. We pride ourselves in providing quality service. I love brokering hay, as customers have chosen to spend their money through my business and I want to do the best job I can,” Tim said.
